Tiny Castle Review

What’s a fantasy kingdom without lots of fantasy creatures, right? TinyCo’s new kingdom-builder does a good job of emphasizing creature care over basic building activities and even infuses a surprising amount of exposition into the proceedings. Once what serves as a tutorial section is through, some of Tiny Castle’s flaws become more noticeable, but overall it’s still an enjoyable freemium caption with lots of charm.

An evil queen is blanketing the realm in a dense fog, and a little band of would-be heroes is preparing to thwart her. Their initial aim is to revitalize the kingdom and gradually push the fog back, but things become a bit more urgent once the Evil Queen catches wind (*rimshot*) of their scheme and kidnaps one of their own. What was a plot to covertly overthrow an oppressive regime turns into a full-on rescue mission soon order. Coincidentally sufficient, saving their captured comrade needs the same form of work as their original plan. Which is to mention there’s plenty of crop growing, creature raising, and minion battling.

Many of Tiny Castle’s mechanics will be familiar to veterans of free-to-play “sim” games. Habitats must be built to house their creatures, farms require to be tended so as to grow crops, new land has to be explored and cleared of detritus to make room for new structures, etc. As with numerous similar titles concerning a zoo-like scenario, each creature might be fed so as to level up, and leveling up permits them to earn more money and even fuse with other fairytale beasts to develop even fancier denizens. Once a centaur, treant, or one of lots of other legendary lifeforms is “old” sufficient, they can in addition be used to combat off the Evil Queen’s minions and free up even more land.

As with numerous animal-centric sim games of this type, Tiny Castle has a fairly vast bestiary that is bound to draw in lots of completionists and keep them busy for some time. Simply obtaining an egg for a new creature might be exciting sufficient, but once combination becomes accesible it might be incredibly complicated to resist the urge to try as numerous combinations as doable. It’s also cool to see that TinyCo has taken the additional step to include distinct visual differences between each creature’s baby, teenage, and adult processes. On the technical side of things I found out it a little bizarre at first to have a separate form of currency (they call it “wishes”) necessary to skyrocket the kingdom’s borders, but a specific building that makes a fairly large amount of wishes for not plenty of coinage and only 6 hours or so of real world time becomes accesible early on. It principally prevents players from elevating too far too rapid, but ties their geographical progress to actual time as a substitute of money. Which is cool because that cash might be much more helpful elsewhere.

Once some more areas have been revealed on the map and a couple more “guests” added to the Legendary Animals roster, things kick off to wind down to a somewhat disappointing degree. Before long it’ll kick off to take hours to hatch a new egg or create a new habitat. a few of this downtime might be managed by planting fewer crops that will grow in a shorter amount of time, or by producing wishes in smaller quantities, but it’s almost as exciting to compile and replant food every thirty seconds as it is to select something that takes 8 hours to grow and easily doing something else.

Despite the inclusion of an actual plot (comparatively speaking), a couple of quest-giving characters, and lots of fairytale creatures to care for, Tiny Castle can’t quite sidestep the typical pitfalls of the genre. It’s not without its charm, for sure. There’s in addition no shortage of activities and quests to complete or animals to raise into adulthood and hybridize–it can just take an terrible lot of looking ahead to meters to fill so as to get by means of it all.
